Kenzo Autumn-Winter 09-10 by Antonio Marras

Far reaching geographies, almost vanished perfumes, dark corners of the memory that flow back to the surface. A series of touching tales, signs that have existed since forever which open up and tell the story of an undefined elsewhere.

The mythical Russia of Doctor Zhivago, of Dostoievski, the Russian Ballets, Goncharova and Larionov, Anna Pavlova or the tsarinas, religious icons and matryoshka dolls.

Like a combination of signs, of languages, colours and shapes, tradition is constantly enriched so that it becomes something else.

I am thinking of the magnificent story told by Akhmatova in his Poem without hero, where a young poet officer commits suicide in the home of actress Olga Glebova, who had given her preference to poet Alexander Blok……………..I am thinking of the poem Le gars written by Marina Tsvetaeva – illustrated by her friend Goncharova – which tells the tragic story of a woman in love who chooses to forego all her close relatives rather than give up her love.

I like to imagine a Russian artist, a Lioubov Popova, who strolls between the place des Victoires and the Louvre, who goes to the Villa Noailles where she encounters Duchamp Mondrian, Man Ray, Luis Bunuel…

These encounters have inspired a collection of contrasts: military felt enriched with embroideries and lurex associated with extra large jacquards featuring constructivist, floral or raised prints. Masculine and reversible woolens, cottons with thin blurred stripes, washed herringbone and discrete patchworks.

Military cuts softened by associations of prints drawing their inspiration from traditional Russia and geometric designs, by extremely precious embroideries on organza or men’s fabrics. Exclusive motifs – such as one finds in the Place des Victoires/Place Rouge print – a cross between ethic floral and very graphic lines on silk twill, viscose and satin.

A palette of soft and dark hues, linked to the vegetal world, earthly and underwood colours enhanced by touches of warm fall nuances: burgundy, carmine, mustard and intense blue. Very contrasted motifs tone on tone. Decors that bring to mind embroideries, tapestries and carpets that have lived in lonely datchas since forever.

“But the Earth, Whose coldness you shared,

Never again will you forsake loving it.”

Vladimir Maiakovski

“I have always loved this great mother Earth. I am fascinated by its tongue. Without understanding it, simply by listening to it, I feel transported to endless vistas – like the sea – planted with grass swaying into the infinite.

I find myself transported all at once with Zhivago who meets Lara, in an image of Rothko or a film by Ejzenstejn, or even a painting by Kandinsky.”

Antonio Marras

For Antonio Marras – like Kenzo Takada himself used to say – men’s fashion has nothing to do with women’s fashion. The approach is totally different.

The first KENZO collection for men by Antonio Marras is the result of subtle work on contrasts between volumes and materials.

Pieces showcasing new proportions are used in surprising overlapping, mixing very fitted shapes in association with oversize models.

A well thought out palette of muted colors, inspired by Russian art, with a variety of powdery hues – overtones of grey, off-white, taupe, cream and faded blue – barely enhanced by a few silhouettes in vibrant colors, mustard, petro blue or burgundy.

A collection cut with exclusive Italian and Japanese fabrics, often reversible. Bonded wools, crinkled jerseys, tailoring fabrics with raw edge cuts.

From floral prints to military camouflage, as though painted by hand, studded or metallic embroideries, geometric and naïve motifs.

A relaxed, military and masculine style, softened by poetic details, faithful to the freedom codes of the Maison, reinterpreted by Antonio Marras for his first KENZO men’s Collection.
